Knee Pain and Acupuncture

Knee is the biggest join in the human body. It carries nearly whole weight of the body so it easily gets injured and is vulnerable to develop osteoarthritis.

Historically, acupuncture has been known to improve knee pain. In traditional Chinese medicine, there are many meridians passing knee joints, from front, lateral or back. Interestingly, in most knee osteoarthritis patients, we can easily find tender spots on these meridian lines.

The effectiveness of acupuncture on knee osteoarthritis has been well documented. Many high quality studies indicated that acupuncture provided pain relief and improved functions for people with osteoarthritis of the knee. A systematic review including 1334 patients published in Rheumatology (Oxford) 2007 concluded: “Acupuncture that meets criteria for adequate treatment is significantly superior to sham acupuncture and to no additional intervention in improving pain and function in patients with chronic knee pain.”
