Sciatic nerve pain is quite often seen in the clinic. Clients usually complaint pain at one side of lower back and buttocks, and sometimes pain even shot down to the leg.
Sciatic nerve is the longest and widest single nerve (roughly as wide as your little finger)in the body. Its pathway goes from side of lower back, through hip then all the way down to your feet. You feel pain when the nerve gets pressed or pinched. The reason varies, such as herniated disc, degeneration, injury etc.
When you are on severe pain such as being unable to walk properly , it is recommended to seek medical attention urgently since it is very important to get inflammation under control.
In most cases, clients visited the clinic for a persistent ache at lower back and hip. It is more likely due to local muscle spasms as a result of disc problem. Massage treatment or acupuncture often achieves quite good results by working on those tender spots to improve local circulation and relax relevant muscles.
There are various exercise and stretch for maintenance stage . Personally, I found stretch of hamstring and hip muscles is quite helpful because it relieves tension on the lower back.
